Chef Saxon,
Being a foodie myself, it is always my mantra to maximise the food going in during the 'buffet' mode to a point where you consume the most expensive items available to make it worth it.
However having said that, once I overate and out come 10% in the carpark after the buffet.
Good exposure the E&O AFC Next Celebrity Chef has for the culinary world in terms on how the life of a chef actually is. We normal people just pay and eat and complain when there is a little screw-up.
Keep up the good work Chef. Probably ate at E&O in the 90's. I think the TripAdvisor comments doesn't do justice.

Oh Chef I forgot to tell you this. I'm a Penangite and some time in 1986 or 87 (if my memory serves me well) my family and I stayed in one of the family rooms of the original E & O before it was renovated into this 6star out-of-reach luxury. The room was so big, simple and old-fashioned. The bath tub was an antique, with legs. There was no running hot water and we had to take cold baths and then walk out into the air-conditioned room.

Well, the hotel has been renovated beyond recognition (I miss the old hotel) and I guess the buffet price must cost a bomb now and be beyond me. I wonder if you give discounts to senior citizens LOL. I do enjoy your musings. Thank you.

Hi Chef,

I just came to know of your existence bcs of the AFC Search for the next Celebrity Chef shows. Ha ha what you wrote here is so true. I can't understand why people see the need to make their every sen worth it by wasting food and torturing themselves. As long as I have tried all the food I enjoy and I feel full it's enough.

Every time I watch Adam Richman on Man Vs Food I suffer along with him, watching him stuff himself. Frankly,I do not want this kind of job. Imagine eating tons of oysters and huge glasses of milkshakes,giant-sized burgers etc etc etc! I worry about the health of Adam Richman, Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern, and the guy who drinks and drinks in all his The Thirsty Traveller shows,Kevin Braugh. These people will pay with their health bcs they eat so much. I don't see Anthony Bourdain cooking in all his shows, just eating and eating!

I can't stand to watch people who chomp through so many hotdogs in hotdog-eating contests and they are asking that it be considered a sport and be included in the Olympics. Just imagine! Hotdogs and burgers are so bad for health and it's disgusting to see people forcing themselves (the sides of their mouths all dirty and sickening to look at) as if they are those poor ducks force-fed so that they produce swollen livers (foie gras?) for the rich to indulge themselves so I don't watch such shows.

I can understand your fear and it's real fear when you see those sumo-wrestlers walking into your hotel. In India,a man has been banned from all buffets bcs he can REALLY TRULY eat any hotel into bankruptcy. Normal people would be satisfied with just ONE large banana but our friend can eat a whole "tandan" (what's the English equivalent of one whole bunch, not just a comb?) of large bananas and he can go on devouring more if more is available haha. It makes me wonder. If we feed such people what about others? And anyway, once we eat over the limit we do not derive pleasure anymore bcs it's over the optimum level.

Well,Chef, keep on writing bcs I love to write too. All the best. By the way you were very diplomatic when Chef Wan mentioned that one of our Malaysian competitors in the AFC Challenge was BORING. I liked the way you put it,very diplomatic and kind! Thank you. Chef Wan was a bit too harsh on her. She's not so conversant in English and not too outgoing. At least she had the courage to even participate! I would get a heart attack, rushing against time like that. I guess to be a celebrity chef one must speak well, especially in the English language and be able to engage the audience. I enjoy watching Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall,Jaime Oliver,Tom Norrington-Davies and a whole lot more bcs they engage the audience.

Ha ha! I have a friend who owns a steamboat restaurant with a buffet concept. She dreads promo time because a family with big girths and appetite to match (parents and kids!) would surely make an appearance and add more weight on their MPV tires when they leave. For those who overindulge on buffets, what you think you gain in value, you'll pay later in healthcare bills.

mike, great read and how true especially here in asia. couldnt agree more with your comment on waste. it really annoys the hell out of me to see the glutton mentality is still alive and well no matter if its at a hotel/restaurant buffet or at an open house gathering during the festive seasons. btw like you i spent over 30yrs in the business and worked in more countries than i care to remember
keep the flag flying
best regards

Mike, this is hilarious! I have spent 20+ years in the meeting/convention planning industry and see this same outlook in private events, as well. The "if you give them a plate they'll treat it like it's their last meal" keeps chefs everywhere on their toes.

Thanks for your wicked sense of humor - really worth the read!

Hi Reeta,
Thanks for dropping by and yes we see this everyday here in Asia when it comes to buffets.

There is nothing better for a chef to see people enjoying their food, but wasting it is not the best situation for you to witness.

Hope it made you smile though :)

Warm regards,

Mike.

I love this post! Every time I go to an all-you-you-can-eat place, there's always people who see it as a personal challenge to eat everything plus the tablecloth.

Showtime... yep!
